My dear diary.

I kept a diary sporadically, from when I was 10 to 19. I totally forgot about it and left it my bedroom in my mom's appt back home. About six month's ago she moved house, found my diary and read it. She then called me to tell me that she had found and read it, couldn't believe I had never told her i'd kept one and then started crying because of all the things that happened to me that she never knew about. So, I decided that all in all, leaving a paper trail lying around your moms house with your deepest darkest secrets on was never the best idea.
Instead this is my solution, its secret and I can say whatever the hell I like without fear of being judged, or more specifically, my mum reading it.

VAUGHAN SYSTEMS - and the bitch who definitely did not love me

So, I'm new to Madrid, I don't speak Spanish and I need a job. Naturally, having graduate from a top University in London with a god degree, teaching English was never even a thought, however, it pays well and is it's my language and un-employment rate is Spain is ridiculously low at 25%....it was a logical step.
So I do my research and find that Vaughan systems pays the highest and is one of the biggest companies teaching English in Spain, at 20 euros an hour you can't realy complain.
Next step.......I send in my CV and take an interview.
I had my interview with lovely Marta Martinez, who works in recruitment and training.
Vaughan systems teaches its only stye of teaching called the "Vaughan method" where basically the whole class is taught orally and there is minimal writing.
Marta informs me that if successful I will cmmence on a weeks training programe where you spend the morning in training casses learning there method then five hours in the afternppn teaching practice classes where the students attend for free and return right a report about the teacher after every class. The reports are made up of 10 question's about the teachers ability methods etc which the student must grade between 1 - 6 and at the bottom write negative and positive comments.
The following Monday I started my training. I had previously met a girl from back home who had also done the training, she had warned me that it was really really tough. They work you hard and expect you to do three hours of home work a night.....I said fine I'm game. She aso mentioned that if you were a minute late, didn't do your homework got bad marks they would tell you to go home there and then.
Marta had also warned me of this...........the minute you do something wrong.....we will warn you and then your out.
So I start my training......everything is going wel I'm early, I'm doing my home work really well and i'm paying attention and really concentrating. The four other people in my group who were also training were al lovely and working just as hard. Over the next few days to my surprise I stat attaining really really good reports from students in class. In fact they - bloody love me!
BUT there's anther girl works with Marta, the complete bitch Natasha. She's Australian, she's fat, she has long straggly hair and a wierd Jaw and really bad teeth. Worse than her physical appearance though - she's one of those people, and this is the type of person who I hate more than anything. She pretends to be something she's not. It's ike if your a bitch, that's fine, but don't try and act like a lovely soft sweet heart whe your really a nasty spiteful and agressive cow. Marta for example, typically Spanish and really hot too, you can tell shes the kind of girl that says it how it is, I love that - it's honest.
natasha however,I get a wierd feeling about her, ofcourse I'm sweet and smile etc.....but there is just something that I feel is not quite right - also the fact that Marta folows her around like her little lap dog is just bewildering. Maybe Natasha has worked here longer - who knows.
So on the fourth day, I have my training, I have my feed back, I have my classes, Marta tels me how well I'm doing, no complaints, all 5's and ^'s while the others are getting 3, 4's and 5's. I do my last 5 hour teaching block and then just as I'm about to walk out the door incomes running Marta and Ntasha like a pair of giggling girls at school.
"I'm afraid we have some bad news" says Marta.....I though shit...here we go.......Natasha jumped in and proceeded to tell me that they won't ask me to come back tomorrow because they feel i have "doubts" about the style of teaching. In utter shock I manage to mumble...."OK... ur thanks.." at which they walk out.
In utter shock I walk across the corridor into the classroom where one of fellow trainees had just finshed teaching....at which point the other 3 piled into the room. When I told them my shock announcement.....they didn't believe me.....why? why? why?...why? I thought....I was so shocked I hadn't even bothered to ask...go and ask they said....
So I pulled my self together and walked into the office where I said "Marta, I'm sorry I was so shocked and I didn't even manage to ask why?"
Ofcourse Natasha jumps up.....and said I can explain lets go into a room...there she tells me that I doubted the method......I grew a little more confident....nothing to lose now.... tell me how....an example....anything....
She got angry...."It's my decidion and I will make it when and how I want" Natasha you bitch I thought. I looked to Marta, nothing......this obviously wasn't your idea....and seeing as you have nothing to say I'm guessing you probably don't agree along side with the praise you gave me today. So I said..."what you mean is...you don't like me?" she simply nodded and said "yes".

I walked outside....burst into tears....and chain smoked 6 cigarettes.
Complete bitch!!!!
She obviously had a personal problem with me....which is so frustrating because I had worked so hard and done so well......as my mother said....there's always one.....jealous, bitter...bored whatever.
2 minutes later my phone rings.....It' the rival company Astex asking me to come in for an interview the following Friday....isn't life strange...

  1. Hi there,
I was interested to read your post as I am thinking of applying to Vaughan and try Teaching English in Spain. I have read mixed reviews about the company. I would be interested to hear what you went on to do next and how is life in Spain. I hope that it has all worked out well for you.

  2. Your story does not add up. Though elements may be true, there are details you have deliberately omitted which would explain why you were kicked out of training. I believe this because I have researched the recruitment managers, Marta Martínez and Natasha Pascua, and found that Natasha is nothing in appearance as described in your story. Therefore I can only conclude that you are embittered about being unsuccessful and in your struggle to come to terms with this failure you have fabricated a villain in this fable who is the irrational reason why you didn't make it. Thanks for the other details though.

  3. My name is Aindrias Fitzgerald and I work as Operations Director of Vaughan Systems. I have worked with Natasha Pascua, the person grossly insulted by the comments of this blog, since 2006. She, during that time, has made an outstanding contribution to this company and has been an excellent colleague.
As to the contents of your blog; I can understand how any person would be upset and disappointed when asked to leave a training programme already committed to and I understand your right to publish your side of the events. However, nothing defines us like our response to defeat and disappointment and, having read with astonishment the extremely disparaging, puerile and personal remarks directed by you at my colleague, I can, at least, be certain that the decision not to hire you was absolutely correct. This was a situation of professional judgement; I see no connection between that and the remarks you have chosen to make. The offending remarks haven only recently been brought to my attention. The purpose of posting on this blog, where you publish my colleague's name but hide your own anonymity, is to publicly defend my colleague. I also defend the right of any person to post their reasoned opinion but not to personally and anonymously attack. I urge you to remove the remarks referred to.

    1. hi Aindrias Fitzgerald,

Reading your post and the previous one about your colleague Natasha, I would like to tell you that as a Lawyer I can help you out in this issue. It´s easy to put someone down with total impunity. This damage can be repaired. I am a Spanish young lawyer but plenty of enthusiasm. How can I contact you?

      best regards,

      Ivan

    2. Hi Aindrias thank you for allowing me to contact you through a public forum. I thought that you were okay and the human side of Vaughan. As you know I have written to you twice, met Richard and written four other emails to Vaughan result nothing..
My story is different from above I passed the training and was working in Barcelona. I was teaching some of the heads of businesses and at Rocco law firm. I worked hard. I took on one job that was four hours travel no pay and four hours teaching paid. Fortnightly so my next Friday was blank. The business materials were very poor. I did it for good will towards the company. Was it appreciated?? no!! I earned just over a 1,000 euros a month a far cry from the 30,000 euros a year I was promised. Next came another job more travel no I said I already do one job for good will no I was told you have to do that job and this one because it is expected. So I informed them I was leaving and going back to Asia for more pay. I do not mind working hard but to work hard and be poor?? My clients could not believe it when I told them I could earn more in Asia than Spain. Now I am trying to get my end of employment cert so I can get my tax back. As above no reply from Vaughan. Surely a company that earns millions is not going to withhold a poor teachers rebate ?? where is Richard philosophy that the teacher is the most important part of his company. Teachers at Vaughan beware when you leave???

  4. I had a job internship as a TEFL teacher in China, I was meant to go in February this year but when they found out I have epilepsy, they dropped me, so I applied too for Vaughan Systems and I went last month to Madrid and I got the same sentence " I'm afraid it's bad news" but Martha explained it to be, obviously with last year being a crap year due to my sister having a stroke and 2 TIAs I just broke down into tears but when I came around I asked Martha politely to explain things to me and she said "you were getting 2's ... 1's but some people were saying 5 and 6, I just personally think your such a lovely person that you more suited for the traditional classroom teaching" and Martha was correct - in 6 weeks time I'm off to teach in Thailand.

  5. Dear blogger,
I've just read your story and thought I'd offer my impression as a neutral stranger. I have no experience of the Vaughan Method nor the people involved but as far as I can see it was made clear to you beforehand that the training program was intense and the company demanding and unsentimental. It is understandable that you were disappointed about not being accepted but your personal and public attack on one of the trainers is extremely bitter and immature. To be honest, I think it is a credit to the trainer that she didn't employ you given the nature of your reaction, as well as the inattention to detail demonstrated by the number of errors in your own writing (do you really have a "god degree"?).

Besides, this blog entry really doesn't reflect well on you nor does it provide useful information to anybody (I came across it as I'm looking for a teaching job in Spain). Years after the event I hope you've got over the experience and thriving in whatever path you've taken. Perhaps it's time to delete the entry.

  6. You are spot on - Natasha is a horrible vile and nasty person. She has a terrible reputation in Madrid among many teachers. Unfair, mean, nasty, looking to feel powerful. Shattering the dreams and hopes of many who genuinely aspire to be a teacher. Some people are on power trips. Thank god you found out early - being kicked out of Vaughan is the equivalent of being kicked out of a Lepar Colony! All the best!!

    1. I completely agree. She's a racist against Black British people. My family has been British for 10 generations but power trip Natasha thought it funny to shatter my hopes and dreams just because I'm Black.

  7. Godawful spelling too.
Lord help the students you'll be paid to teach at Astex.
Are they a bunch of cowboys too?
But then again, writing counts for very little in the "Vaughan" method, right?
I'm also mystified by Vaughan honcho Aindrias's comment 'hide your anonymity'.
How on earth does one do that? Hide your identity perhaps, but your anonymity?
And you guys are in the business of teaching English? God help us all.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Adrian, You are so right, awful spelling, grammar, and what does it mean to, 'hide your anonymity'? This blogger claims to have graduated from a top London university??? Maybe the 'cowboys' as you say speak better English after all. Richard Vaughan is a great guy and has built an amazing company. Unfortunately, there will always be certain bad apples in every bunch; however, after suffering through this blogger's poor demonstration of English usage, I think they made the right decision.

  9. I for one would like to add my two cents to all of this.
First of all, can I just say I think this blogger has every right to express their frustration and angst about what was clearly a very unpleasant experience. Spain may be in recession, but it does not give these companies a right to treat people like absolute crap and think they can get away with it. This is karma in action and I have no doubt that the aforementioned staff has their fun deconstructing vulnerable trainees and their appearance in the staff room. This company is full of too many people on a power trip and staff are not disposable or worthy of being treated like commodities. I too had a Vaughan experience that was extremely unpleasant. I know full well of this Natasha character and I believe she is a very unpleasant person. Somebody who is a real jobsworth who seeks to shatter the dreams of many. It simply isn't fair. The company has an extremely high turnover of staff. I came to Spain as it was a country I always wanted to live in. Vaughan aims to grab you, saving you thousands on TEFL courses, looking for your 'qualities as a teacher'. I relocated from the North of England to become an English teacher in my favourite country. Vaughan was advertising for staff for its University programme. After a terrifying interview and selection process, a bunch of timid trainees entered this room upon which we are given a speech about a sacred method. Thinking sect? You may be right. And before you know it, the training starts and you are told you will be teaching the next day. With no guidance - they throw you in the deep end to test you. On my first day of teaching a teacher (not a trainee) stormed up the corridor and said "if this is the way this company treats it staff I'm outta here". In terms of the training - don't speak up, don't ask questions, you may lose your potential job and be humiliated. The general tone of the first few days of the training course in which a bunch of nervous trainees were so hysterical in case they made a mistake.

    1. The programme is run by Marta and Natasha. I too found Marta to be quite nice and positive. Natasha... there was something not right. They do NOT just judge you on your teaching ability. Do not get on her bad side I thought. I did my homework until 2am which is supposedly checked every night (not). I know this because a fellow trainee who wasn't dropped did not even bother to do their homework for the entire course (who, by the way, is still working for the company). By the third day I was still asking lots of questions - perhaps this was what got me into trouble. I was called in for a chat and told that I was being let go with concerns about my pace, and other concerns that the method is not suited toward me. The highest mark you can get is a 6 in an evaluation, and my evaluations were consistently high with positive reviews, 6s, 5s and a couple of 4s. My fellow trainees were not getting such high marks. As I walked off with my bag I thought this is crazy - these people who are letting me go have never even observed any of my classes! I was very upset as I had invested a lot of money to come to Spain for a job I had hoped would work. But clearly I lacked that special something that eluded me. It was a slippery slope. But an invaluable lesson about choosing a company that takes care of its staff. I went on to get my Trinity Certificate and travelled and worked around Spain. Eventually I put the experience behind me. While I was travelling my boyfriend and I took a weekend away to a city full of Vaughan teachers on a University Program. These wonderfully professional characters were in a bar one night talking about which students they found the most sexually alluring. I do not condone the personal attacks, but for what it’s worth this is my side of the story. If you treat people like crap, don't expect to get away with it in this day and age. People have a right for their voice to be heard. From my perspective, Vaughan is a company in desperate need of a shake-up. Its middle management have been working there far too long and have become far too powerful with absolutely no reasonable judgement. The company has received a bad reputation as a result and is crying out for a massive overhaul.

  10. Bravo to Cathy S. for daring to tell the truth and set things out clearly. For the record, I've never heard of the Vaughan System or this school in Madrid. However, I think that everyone has the right to tell his own point of view in his own blogs. When you come right down to it, the author of this blog didn't reveal Natasha's full name, in fact we don't even know if Natasha is even the person's real name or only a pseudonym. I'm not a lawyer, but I don't believe you can exactly call it slander when you don't even know the person's full name, or even if the blogger has used the person's real name at all.

When someone treats us badly, we're not going to go out and do all sorts of research into that person's credentials! That person can be the biggest CEO in the country, we wouldn't know that. All we know is how that person treated us.

Oftentimes as well (not saying that this is necessarily the case in this blog post), people will hide truly abhorrent behaviour behind a fancy title or an important job position. So a job title or a fancy position doesn't necessarily say anything about a person's character.

(If you don't believe me, think about all the clergymen who have abused young boys, cases which have been proven and documented. They were untouchable because of their prestigious jobs, that didn't make them good people.) (Once again, not saying that Natasha is anything like those clergymen. I just mean that being a highly qualified professional doesn't necessarily give a person a good character.)

  11. I going to add my two cents to this as well. For better or worse I can not hide behind anonymity. First off I want to say that I dont agree with personal attacks on people, its disgraceful and bullying so Im not going to agree with what the original post said about Natasha and/or Marta - my opinions on people are my own.

    HOWEVER

One thing I can add to is the whole experience. It was to be frank, pretty disgraceful. The whole way it was conducted is fasical. What is reassuring is that having a quick look around the internet, it seems like I am not the only, as evident by Cathy S which I COMPLETELY agree with. I found this website in particular very interesting, http://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Vaughan-Systems-Reviews-E251270.htm alot of what is said about the Training, again I completely agree with. I feel that the whole NIE process they "help" you with is also very manipulative and questionable (charging 220e for something which costs about 10e is a disgrace). To be frank I would not recommend this company to anyone. I would actively try to warm people to say away and look for another alternative.

I hope this doesnt come off that Im just throwing a tantrum, something which I believe the original blogger is doing. I doing well work wise so I have come out well. However I know other people might not be so lucky and I honestly feel that the way the company treats its employee REALLY needs to be addressed.

  13. Hi everyone,

My name is Anabel. I worked for Vaughan Systems for a few years and loved every minute of it. About the training, it's not about you thinking what a great teacher you are, you have to meet the "Vaughan profile" to be a Vaughan teacher (don't take it too personal). I don't work for them anymore: they asked me to leave after I introduced other material in my classes to make them more entertaining: big mistake. You can only use the Vaughan Method in their classes. As for the management team: Fitz, Natasha, Marta, Richard... they are all great. That is my opinion and my experience. I hope it helps.

You SHOULD be able to use your material in classes to make the classes interesting for students. That is the job of a good teacher. To adapt the classes to the needs of the students. Please!
Should be glad to get rid of these fraudsters and cowboys by the sound of it. They do not sound like nice people at all. Avoid avoid avoid!
Take some time for some serious reflection and get down off of that cross!

  14. Vaughan Systems is a bit of a scam. I´ve never met anyone who studied with their methodology and who was even remotely fluent. They make most of their revenue from their corporate training, which is a lost cause as most of teaching english in Spain. There are obvious cultural issues in Spain that impede any sort of large scale fluency in the language.

I had the chance to work for the company a couple of years ago when they got acquired by Ahorro Corporación. Richard Vaughan is on a constant power trip, the whole company is built upon his figure and his persona. He created a brand where there were none and leveraged heavily on radio and his somehow "seducing" persona to get a cult-like following.

The company was scrappy at first and when Ahorro Bought the majority stake things started getting a bit more professional maybe but it is still based upon a almost ancient method of learning based on repetition. That´s the funniest part. If you get into conversation with someone who has done one of their course, they might even answer you flawlessly but they´d barely know what they are saying.

Teaching english in Spain is this strange limbo where expats fall into without too much thinking and before they can realize they´ve wasted years in the country and it is just too late to go home. Please do not expect to make a decent living out of teaching english in spain.

Im saying all this because the company and Richard Vaughan are one of those great example of mediocrity that can only prosper in this country.

When I´ve read the post I wasnt surprised the least but I´ve scrolled down and the company is still the same crappy, controversial, mediocre company it was years ago. They used to have a CEO from Wharton, do not know what happened to him, apparently it was replaced by a local guy. Anyway, do not buy their materials (they´re 30 years old, english as a second language education has improved a lot in the past 10 years), do not pay for their lessons (they want you to learn a language without thinking), do not work for them (if you're an expat, I´m sure you have better opportunities).

    1. Hi, I'd like to say that you're not right. I'm Spanish and I've been learning English in Vaughan for several months. I'm doing the Master Programs and I think I've reached a good level. So I have to say that the method works. But, what it really works is your effort. You have to study very hard at home every day and you have to get in touch with the language as much as you can, otherwise you're wasting your money and time. Thank you.

  17. I am a current teacher at Vaughan Systems. I must say that my training experience wasn't anything like that although I have heard many a horror story. I also think that the approach of your experience is very bitter and attacking someone that way is childish. I understand that you felt this way but personally insulting and giving maybe an exagarated/false impression of someone is slightly unfair.

The company do pay well and you do have to fit a certain profile. I would say this would be the case for any job, the only problem is that the training is very tough and archaic, no one monitors your classes it is all very subjective and also means you have to dedicate two weeks to a training you might not even get and I totally agree that the approach to in the interview and training process needs to be open and honest from the get go infact completely changed. I wouldn't say I loved the company there is A LOT this needs to be looked at. HR are not great at their jobs and no one seems to know what they are doing. But I will say that it is a great foot in the door, all the teachers are great and if you are new to Spain the help with the NIE is expensive but well worth it as the hassle of doing it yourself in this country is a stress you don't need. I love teaching and you can add you own flare/style to the classes within boundries as they do pride themselves on the method, if you keep you head down do your work and enjoy teaching, Vaughan is a good stepping stone, the only problem is unfortunately favourites are made and there is a lot of injustice. I will be honest, I tolerate the company for some of the great people that work there, great students I have met and the money.

  18. I was on the training program and the homework didn't really clicked on me from the go... it was just useless busywork designed to put you off... and that's what it did for me... also the method, as successful as it appears to be, is devoid of substance, it sucks, not being able to explain anything adds more insult to injury, since even when we were taught our spanish we would have our grammar succinctly explained. Vaughan is the McDonald's of english teaching.

    ReplyDelete
  19. There are more spelling and grammatical mistakes than words written correctly - I'd be very suprised if you, "Naturally, having graduate [sic] from a top University [sic] in London with a god [sic] degree,..."
It seems unlikely that you would have made a very good English teacher. Sour grapes, possibly?

I don`t know Natasha, but I really do not understand why you have to be so impolite... because they`ve rejected you. I love Vaughan system, and I can assure you my English has improved a lot, with Vaughan Radio. They have a very very good teachers and in my opinion they are the best in the market.
I think most of the people don`t realize the opportunity that Vaughan system gives us. You have the chance to learn from scratch or to improve your English for free. As far as I know there is no other company in Spain, which can offer this product.
So, please forget about complains, about if you like them or not ….. If you don`t like just turn it off or switch...and if they rejected you, as you said, you`ll try to find another job.
Try to do your best and forget the rest! Your life will be better:)

  21. Hi,

As a Vaughan teacher starting my 3rd year of work now, I have nothing but praise for this company. Thanks to Vaughan, I´ve had the chance to meet amazing students and I´m happy to be given quite a bit of freedom in the way I prepare my classes, including a part to motivate students to work on their own, which I always do and see how productive it can be. I consider Fitz a very inspiring teacher and Marta (who I haven´t met personally yet), really nice and quick responding when I ask for help with my doubts. The training in Madrid was tough, yes, but we learned a lot and were given very good advice. I´m very thankful to Vaughan.
